The availability of jobs varies from year to year. In high schools and universities, peak hiring times are for jobs starting in March/April and September, but the schools may look for applicants as soon as 6 months before the position opens, so there tend to be opportunities available at any given time. Supply of teachers usually follows demand, but will often lag behind for a few years.

For example, after the bubble burst in the early 90's, teachers continued to flood the market while openings decreased in number. In the past few years, however, the supply of teachers for private schools has dried up and schools are finding it more difficult to round up qualified applicants. (Unfortunately, teacher pay scales have not yet reflected this.) Universities used to hire teachers for long periods of time, but the recent trend is to keep instructors for 3 years and then drop them and hire new ones, primarily as a money-saving strategy.

The most recent news is the bottom falling out of the Asian markets in late '97. Strangely enough, this may not mean fewer teaching jobs, as the drop in jobs may be compensated for in fewer people going to Asia to work because they hear things are tough over there financially. Last I heard, there are still few teachers answering ads compared to three or four years ago.

Advanced Atomistic Modelling of Multi-Layer Optical Coatings

An EPSRC sponsored postdoctoral fellowship is available for 3 years in the Department of Chemistry, Imperial College London. You will work within an internationally recognised team of scientists in studies of the composition, structure and electronic structure of functional coatings. Typical optical coatings are nanostructures consisting of several different oxide or metal layers deposited on a glass or polymer substrate. They are used as anti-reflective films on spectacle lenses, UV and infra-red blockers, lighting filters, conductive oxides for flat screen displays and solar control coatings on windows. The design and optimization of coatings requires a basic understanding of the effects of surface and interfacial composition, defects and impurities on mechanical and optical properties. This project will shed light on these fundamental questions through a combination of first principles simulations and empirical modeling.
The project is part of an EPSRC Materials Modelling Consortium involving researchers from 6 universities and 2 industrial partners.
You should have a PhD and a strong research track record in theoretical physics, chemistry or a related discipline. A background in advanced scientific computing and experience of electronic structure theory is also desirable.
The salary will be in the range of 22,116 to 26,652 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience.

Post-Doctoral Research Assistant in Computer Simulation of Materials

School of Physical Sciences, University of Kent at Canterbury
A postdoctoral position is available in the simulation-based applications group at the University of Kent. The position is funded by the European-Union INTERREG programme, and offers an outstanding opportunity to pursue internationally-leading research using atomistic computer simulation methods. The project aim is to expand a “Virtual Centre of Excellence” in this research in the S.E. England-North France European region, making outreach to academic partners and work on industrially-relevant problems priorities. Within this remit the successful candidate will have considerable freedom to pursue his/her chosen research goals. These are likely to overlap with some of the group’s interests which include nanostructured materials, interfaces, surfaces and surface processes, low-dimensional systems, transport, defects and electronic-physical structure relationships. This is a European venture involving the universities of Kent, Littoral (Dunkirk) and Picardie (Amiens), and there is ample funding for exchange visits. We have excellent local computing facilities and extensive access to a range of national supercomputers.
You should have a Ph.D. and experience in computer simulation techniques in physics, materials science or theoretical chemistry. Experience with first-principles (DFT) methods is particularly welcome. Knowledge of French would be helpful, but is not essential. In the Disability Determination Process some courts look to evidence of whether identified alternative jobs for which a claimant is qualified exist within a local or national economy. US Social Security Administration (SSA) "underemployment insurance" is just such and example. It's Step V: "Considering the individual's RFC, age, education, and work experience, does his or her impairment(s) prevent the individual from adjusting to other work? This is a practical question: Do the alternative jobs exist that one can perform based on their job content (lower work demands) and if such jobs can be defined and described, do they exist in sufficient numbers in the economy?" more
